Tasting Notes
-
Vinous, November 2021,
Score: 92This is a pup of a Pinot Noir, full of youthful vigor. In addition to its floral and cherry-infused nose, there is a bouquet garni of woody herbs, which could be partly explained by a 25% whole bunch component, as well as in-bunch variation, which was a signature of this vintage at Felton Road, according to winemaker Blair Walter. While silken and satisfying, there is an innate energy and this youthful expression has a brace of gravelly tannins that build toward the end. The sinewy, fragrant and fresh finish provides line and length. Far too young to be approaching. Give it a minimum of 2 years to get into its groove. Drink 2022-2030.
Producer
Felton Road

Felton Road needs little introduction for lovers of New Zealand Pinot Noir. They are firmly established as one of the top producers of fine wine in the Central Otago region of New Zealand’s South Island. In addition to their renowned Pinot Noirs they also produce a couple of cuvees of Chardonnay, a Riesling and a Vin Gris.
Region
Central Otago
For many years New Zealand growers did not know which grape variety could grow in Central Otago. Situated in the very south of the South Island it was always thought that only white grape varieties could be planted. Nowadays however there is no turning back as Pinot Noir rules the roost. There are many reasons why pinot has had so much success in the region, including the dry, sunny climate and the well-draining schist soils. Pinot Noir from Central Otago is usually quite powerful with lots of vibrant fruit and relatively high alcohol.
