Tasting Notes

Translucent, green-hued gold. An expansive, mineral-driven bouquet evokes fresh citrus and orchard fruits, iodine, buttered toast and chamomile. Shows impressive depth and fine definition to the vibrant tangerine, Anjou pear, sweet butter and tarragon flavors, which tighten up slowly through the back half. Powerful yet graceful in style, displaying sharp focus and mineral thrust on an impressively long, chewy finish that features lingering floral and orange pith notes. Drink 2024-2033.

Cullen Wines

This legendary biodynamic winery in the Margaret River is now over 50 years old and is run by Vanya Cullen, who represents the very pinnacle of Australian winemaking prowess. Generations of knowledge ensure the family's philosophy of ‘quality, integrity and sustainability’ is always retained, and this is evident in the outstanding results Vanya is producing. Treating the vineyard as a living system, Vanya uses minimal chemical intervention with the aim of healing the soil and protecting the environment. The grapes are harvested on favourable planetary aspects and pressed in the winery without any additions, reaffirming the idea that nature is perfect as it is. Indeed, leading wine critic Jancis Robinson describes Cullen Estate as “one of Australia’s best producers… producing elegant, biodynamic wines with a distinct personality”. Wilyabrup, a region nicknamed ‘the Pauillac of Margaret River’, is home to impeccable cool climate wines and Vanya Cullen’s Diana Madeline Bordeaux blend is one of the top examples of the region.

Region

Margaret River

Certainly the best wine area in Western Australia, if not the whole country. The idyllic scenery of Margaret River (surf-lapped rocky coast, towering karri forest, abundant wildlife) has only been home to wine production since the 1970s. Hard to believe given the quality of the Chardonnays and Cabernets produced by the likes of Leeuwin, Cullen, Moss Wood and Vasse Felix. Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon all also thrive here. The climate is mild, tempered by the Indian Ocean and the drying wind known as the Freemantle Doctor, and infertile red loam soils are the most sought after for viticulture.
