Decanter, July 21, Score: 98
Vanya Cullen is the tannin whisperer. Here, the finest of fine tannins are saturated deep within the fresh dark berry and currant fruit, conferring a dryness to the palate. This lends gravitas, without detracting from the fruit purity and sheer fluid grace of delivery. Finely honed, the fruit is perfumed with roses, violets, tobacco, bitter chocolate and cedar. A pronounced graphite and gravel undertow persists through the prolonged, elegant finish. Drink 2021-2035.

Matthew Jukes, July 21, Score: 20
Utterly spectacular. The balance, the blend, the finesse and the poise here is sensational. Such class and control and a multitude of flavour facets, none of which are hurried, cramped or in a rush to impress, The flavours are orderly, charming, polite and all-pervasive. This is a tour de force and one of the finest DM I have ever tasted.

Jancis Robinson, July 21, Score: 18.5
Deep dark red. Elegant aroma which is marked by cassis and a light leafiness and a suggestion of Cabernet Franc's characteristic blackcurrant-leaf quality. Dry, refined tannins giving a dry mineral character. Plush and full in the mouth, the mineral character as much in the tannins as in flavour. ‘Toast to mum’, says Vanya Cullen. Smoky but not reductive. Layers of paper-fine tannins. Elegant. Opens up to a slight note of curry leaf. Or is it tobacco, or both? Very, very dry without being drying. Ultimate in refinement. Drink 2022-2033.

Huon Hooke, July 21, Score: 98
Deep red-purple colour leads into a bouquet that`s already very complex, with violet, blueberry, raspberry, cherry and many other fruit aromas. The oak is beautifully handled, the tannins formidable but balanced. 98 points.

James Halliday, July 21
Deep purple hues with aromas of violets, wild rose, mulberry, satsuma plum and cigar box. A light and intense palate with balanced but opulent fruit-density, fine tannins and flavours of rose, chocolate, ironstone, cigar box and plum. Cellar up to 50 years.

This legendary biodynamic winery in the Margaret River is now over 50 years old and is run by Vanya Cullen, who represents the very pinnacle of Australian winemaking prowess. Generations of knowledge ensure the family's philosophy of ‘quality, integrity and sustainability’ is always retained, and this is evident in the outstanding results Vanya is producing. Treating the vineyard as a living system, Vanya uses minimal chemical intervention with the aim of healing the soil and protecting the environment. The grapes are harvested on favourable planetary aspects and pressed in the winery without any additions, reaffirming the idea that nature is perfect as it is. Indeed, leading wine critic Jancis Robinson describes Cullen Estate as “one of Australia’s best producers… producing elegant, biodynamic wines with a distinct personality”. Wilyabrup, a region nicknamed ‘the Pauillac of Margaret River’, is home to impeccable cool climate wines and Vanya Cullen’s Diana Madeline Bordeaux blend is one of the top examples of the region.Read less

Region
Margaret River
Certainly the best wine area in Western Australia, if not the whole country. The idyllic scenery of Margaret River (surf-lapped rocky coast, towering karri forest, abundant wildlife) has only been home to wine production since the 1970s. Hard to believe given the quality of the Chardonnays and Cabernets produced by the likes of Leeuwin, Cullen, Moss Wood and Vasse Felix. Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon all also thrive here. The climate is mild, tempered by the Indian Ocean and the drying wind known as the Freemantle Doctor, and infertile red loam soils are the most sought after for viticulture.
