Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2020

Understandably we were not sent a sample due to the very limited production. The Javillier Corton Charlemagne is invariably a superb example, often in a relatively restrained and fresher style. Always a favourite.

    Score: 93-96

Still in barrel unracked and unfined. Full bright yellow with a little cheerful plump toasty oak. The weight shows first, the Corton-Charlemagne minerals come through behind. A wine, which is brooding and biding its time. Very good acidity, plenty of fruit weight. All is there, with as much power as is desirable before losing balance, and a fine long finish. 4 stars

Producer

Domaine Patrick Javillier

Visits to Patrick Javillier’s cellars are always a delight. His enthusiasm and passion for his subject and in particular the wines of Meursault are second to none. Like all great winemakers he has his own views as to how wines should be made and the benefits of ageing both in cask and bottle and everything is thought out meticulously with this in mind. He makes wonderfully textbook wines, which for us are the most perfect reflection of the wines of Meursault. His wines have the natural exuberance that one expects from this the most exotic of the three famous white Côte de Beaune villages, whilst having a complexity of texture that only the very finest vineyards and producers ever seem to produce.

Region

Corton-Charlemagne

As legend goes, Charlemagne, king of the Franks, ordered Chardonnay planted in the vineyard of Corton during his reign in the 8th century so as he would not stain his light-coloured beard during moments of great thirst. This may be mere romantic fallacy, but what cannot be denied is the exceptional quality of this Grand Cru appellation in Aloxe Corton in the Cote de Beaune.
