Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2020

The family plot is one of the very best in the appellation sitting just below Chambertin Clos de Bèze. A wonderfully vibrant and energetic wine, so full of fresh cranberry and pomegranate. Instantly striking with layers of lavender and violet. A fine balance between crispness and sweetness of fruit, with an unassuming line of structure. High class, very pure and long.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, November 2020,
    Score: 92-94

30% Whole Bunch Fermentation; 80% new wood. Dense mid purple. Certainly the bouquet is of ripe dark raspberry fruit, with a suave mass of fruit immediately on the palate then a more fine-boned finished. Engaging, could use more grip. 3 Star

Producer

Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: parents Christine and Philippe, and children Caroline and Nicolas. They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.

Region

Chapelle Chambertin

One of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. Chapelle-Chambertin's vineyards are on gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north. The thin rocky soil forces the vines to work hard. The exceptional wines produced in Chapelle-Chambertin are complex, powerful and incredibly long-lasting.
