    Rewarding aromas of tayberry and loganberry. This is a broad and generous Chambolle with a more powerful structure than some years. Lovely composure and the sweet fruit sensation at the end make it hugely pleasurable.

    The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village felt very tight on the nose, and perhaps a little earthier than I expected. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, predominantly red berry fruit mixed with light clove and white pepper notes toward the finish. Very composed in style; just afford it 3–4 years for the aromatics to open. Drink 2023 - 2030

    This is a stunning wine with so much tension and corresponding plushness. With more poise and detail than hosts of other estates’ Premiers Crus this is a stupendous Pinot. It also does a neat trick of appearing flatteringly forward while retaining a devastatingly crunchy finish. Genius.

Domaine Ghislaine Barthod

Exquisitely pure, ethereal, and terroir-driven, Ghislaine’s wines also have wonderful mineral raciness. The domaine was originally created by Marcel Noëllat, Ghislaine’s maternal grandfather. After attending viticultural college in Beaune in the 1980s, she began assisting her father, Gaston Barthod, at the family domaine. Her straightforward, no-nonsense approach helped introduce a sorting table, extended lees contact, a gentle cold soak before fermentation, and domaine bottling. All this enabled greater control over the quality of fruit, texture of tannins, and purity of flavours. The results have been year upon year of magical masterpieces from Chambolle Musigny. Along with her partner Louis Boillot, today she is joined in the vineyard and cellar by their son, Clément.

The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
