Tasting Notes

    Goedhuis, November 2020

A hugely sought-after Premier Cru due to its superb location, neighbouring the great Grand Cru vineyards. Hints of mandarin, lime and basil, this wine jumps out of the glass at you. It has drive and energy. It is direct and pure, with a touch of citrus fruit sorbet. The succulent volume gives way to a bright piercing freshness on the finish. Great length. This is truly top class.

    Score: 91-93

An elegant array is comprised of citrus rind, mineral reduction, quinine and white flowers. I very much like the intensity and fine detail to the highly energetic and overtly stony middle weight flavors that terminate in a clean, very dry and youthfully austere finale. This is lovely though in contrast to the Fourchaume, a wine that's going to need at least a few years first. 2027+

Classic Montée de Tonnerre with some driving mineral notes and firm acidity to keep the ripe fruit in balance. Very elegant with stony, flinty notes on the aftertaste adding an extra dimension to the pristine tree-fruit flavour. Drinking well already but with a long future ahead. Drink 2022-2028

The drawbridge is up and the portcullis is firmly down, giving MdT a rather closed and introverted feel. There is little obvious fruit here but a mass of body and after this a wave of acidity which is waiting to pounce. I feel for unprepared palates approaching this wine and expecting a genial conversation, because MdT will most likely tell you to go forth… Having said this, there is nobility beneath the shimmering surface. The scale of flavour here is delivered with good grace and with stunning precision. This will be a long-lived wine which will emerge stealthily from its lair when it, not you, is ready. From three plots of, which Pied d’Aloue is the oldest (1935). Clear pale fresh colour. Very intense if quite backward, Steelier than the Mont de Milieu with superb grip at the back. Not just the intensity, but the balance is there. This is a Chablis of enormous power and intensity, which finishes on a crisp marine bedrock. No wood on this one. 4 stars.

Domaine Billaud-Simon

Bernard Billaud sold his estate to the Cote d’Or’s largest landowner, Maison Faiveley, in 2014 and it is heartening to see this famous Nuits St Georges house both maintaining and driving the quality ideals of this great Chablis estate ever further forward. This substantial domaine of 17 hectares comprises exceptional vineyard sites including four premiers crus and four grands crus. Mature vineyards and minimal use of oak produce crisp and driven wines which are delicious in youth and fabulous with some age. The individual terroirs always shine through.

Region

Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
