With yields down 30% they have just two barrels in 2019. Full of character, with attractive smoky aromas. It is full of rich brioche and yeasty baguette flavours and has great weight and depth. The long, layered palate, with a hint of cracked hazelnut, shows true Grand Cru class.
The Coffinet family are very much part of Chassagne Montrachet’s wine aristocracy, having owned vineyards in the village since the mid-1800s. As with many Burgundian families, there are many offshoots, the result of generations of intermarriage with other famous local names. Our latest new discovery stems from Fernand Coffinet, whose daughter Laura met Philippe Duvernay from Rully, to create the exciting under-the-radar estate of Domaine Coffinet-Duvernay. Their 7 hectares of vines are split between village, eight different Premiers Crus and a gem of a parcel of Grand Cru.
Bâtard-Montrachet is a great white Grand Cru in Burgundy's Côte D'or. Its vineyards are located onthe slope beneath Le Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune. Bâtard-Montrachet's soils are heavier than those surrounding it, made up of brown limestone and gravel, which pave the way for rich, nutty, honeyed and heady wines with good structure. They are not as elegant as those from Chevalier-Montrachet and are broader and weightier than wines from Montrachet.
