  • Goedhuis, December 2019

Named after the small stream, La Petite Vouge, that runs through this vineyard located on the north side of the Clos Vougeot, wedged up towards Musigny. As always, a cuvée that should not be passed over. This 2018 has hints of mocha and Arabian spice. The oak is a little apparent in the palate at this early stage, but there is plenty of volume and concentrated fruit which will absorb it in time. Masses of potential.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 90

The 2017 Vougeot Les Petits Vougeot 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet of red currant, cranberry, briar and wet limestone aromas, all very precise. The palate is well balanced with good structure. Very fresh, if just a little austere in style, with a peppery, quite persistent, classic vervain-tea-tinged finish. Drink 2022-2035

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 90-93

This too is noticeably ripe though the fruit profile derives more from the red side of the spectrum, and in particular cherry and pomegranate, though there are wisps of black raspberry and spice in evidence. The sleek, elegant and refined medium weight flavors flash good minerality before concluding in a balanced, complex and sneaky long finale. This is lovely and the supporting tannins are quite fine-grained. Drink 2030+. Outstanding

  • Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 90-92

The 2018 Vougeot 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeot has turned out very well, opening in the glass with a lovely bouquet of cassis and plums, complemented by top notes of woodsmoke and violets. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with a bright spine of acidity and a fragrant, precise finish. A Chambolle-Musigny in all but name, this is an elegant and exquisitely balanced cuvée.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 91-94

This is a strongly limestone soil, perhaps more typical of Chambolle. Lively bracing fresh red fruit, raspberry and redcurrant, very graceful with superb sweet and balanced fruit, elegance throughout. Amazing length.

The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.Read less

Region

Vougeot

Unlike the other predominant Côte de Nuits appellations, Vougeot's main appellation is its onlygrand cru vineyard, Clos de Vougeot. It is by far the largest grand cru of the area totalling over 50 hectares with over 40 owners rumoured to own vines. As a result, its vineyards run from the flat, clay-dominated valley floor to the well-drained, venerated sloped hillsides suggesting that its quality ending on where it is grown. As a result, it is often the least valued of the grand crus and can offer excellent value, particularly in good vintages where ripeness has been attained.
