  • Goedhuis, December 2019

The most dazzling of Vosne’s premiers crus sitting alongside the great La Tâche. This is a beauty. Redolent of wild Black Forest fruits, this has abundant layers of nuanced flavours. A fruit bomb but with style. It marries power with seductiveness. The tight tannic core flows seamlessly through to the long finish.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 92-94

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru has a more refined, mineral-driven, slightly earthier bouquet compared to Les Suchots, offering a mixture of red and black fruit, bay leaf and a touch of baking powder. The palate is medium-bodied with a core of candied red fruit, quite plush and very sensual. Orange and mango notes permeate the lush, caressing finish. You could drink this now. One that will be too tempting once in bottle. Drink 2022-2042

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 91-94

Noticeable but not dominant wood frames the restrained if spicy aromas of poached plum, black cherry, violet and Asian-style tea. There is excellent intensity to the muscular middle weight plus-sized flavors that culminate in a balanced, complex and sneaky long mineral-inflected finish. This is not quite as powerful as usual but it's definitely finer. Drink 2033+. Sweet spot Outstanding

  • Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 94-96

As usual, the 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts is the most reserved premier cru in the cellar, unwinding slowly in the glass with aromas of cherries, berries and cassis mingled with notes of grilled squab and smoked meats. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with a deep and concentrated core that's still youthfully tight-knit. This is a Malconsorts with a brilliant future.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 93-96

Richer purple with a heady nose, all three Vosne 1ers crus are so different. The oak is present but happily balanced, and there is a wealth of gorgeous concentrated fruit, cooler than the nose initially suggested. Lots of oak but it is being digested nicely and will not dry out the wine. Three barrels, all to be bottled in magnums.

The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.Read less

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
