  • Goedhuis, December 2019

Sitting just above Echézeaux Grand Cru, Beaumonts is a relatively cool vineyard location which was certainly to its advantage in 2018. Aromas of huckleberries and violet fill the glass. This is a straight, linear style, with energetic brightness. The subtly sweet volume evolves in the mouth, and this Vosne Romanée is always composed and thought-provoking.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 91-93

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaumonts 1er Cru has a fragrant, floral bouquet with pressed iris flower and potpourri infusing dark cherry and black currant fruit. There is fine lift and perfume here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, moderate density, good acidity and a slightly savory, dried-blood-tinged finish that I find attractive. Drink over the next 12–18 years. Drink 2022-2038

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 91-93

Here the nose is compositionally similar to the Charmes save for the fact that it's much spicier. The super-sleek, intense and beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors brim with minerality on the classy and sneaky long finale. This is like rolling small pebbles around in the mouth and the associated salinity adds a sense of lift to the finish. Good stuff. Drink 2030+. Sweet spot Outstanding

  • Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 92-94

Another great success this year is the 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaumonts, a brilliant cuvée in the making that bursts with aromas of cassis, cherries, smoked duck, dried flowers and rich soil tones. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and textural, with a multidimensional core of lavishly ripe but succulent fruit that entirely conceals the wine's structuring tannins. Readers who are unable to secure a few bottles of Hudelot-Noellat's Richebourg this year should consider consoling themselves with this Beaumonts, as the latter tastes in many respects like the former's junior sibling.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 92-95

Bright deep purple with density and vigour. Deep red cherries, a little raspberry, the fruit resonates right across the palate, very well refined tannins at the back and good length. They are top of the hill on the rock.

The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.Read less

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
