Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 91-93
The 2018 Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru comes from vines located high up on the hill at the same altitude as Clos des Ducs in a windy location. This has the most precocious bouquet among d’Angerville’s Volnays, with blueberry, cassis and iodine aromas billowing from the glass. The palate is built around a sweet core of slightly confit fruit. An unusually outgoing and approachable Les Taillepieds that is full of joie-de-vivre. Whether it has the intellectual element of, say, the Clos des Ducs or the Champans is another matter. It comes across as a Volnay more intent on sensory enjoyment. 2022 - 2045

Perfumed, airy and more high-toned aromas derive more from the red side of the fruit spectrum while displaying pretty touch of spice and exotic tea. The cool and gorgeously textured medium-bodied flavors also brim with minerality on the focused, powerful and particularly firm finale that goes on and on. This is wonderful and I very much like the style and sheer class of this built-to-age Taillepieds. Drink 2033+ Don't miss! Outstanding

Pretty mid crimson-purple. The fruit here has a more savoury note on first acquaintance, before delivering impressive volume in the mouth. Hugely plump dark raspberry fruit with a little vanilla top-note thanks to the oak.

Arriving at the family Château in Volnay and standing in the famed Clos des Ducs overlooking the village and its other 1er crus below always gives me a huge thrill. Region
Volnay
A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
