  • Goedhuis, September 2022

A real winner from Jeff and Jean-Claude Berrouet. The scent of juicy red plums and berries is lifted by elegantly integrated floral notes. The palate shows a bright, fine tannic structure and a lovely richness of fruit, with spice, dark and red plums persisting in the beautifully long finish.

  • Vinous, March 2021, Score: 91

The 2018 Vieux Château Saint André is owned by the Berrouet family, of course, synonymous with Petrus. It has a lovely nose of lilting red berry fruit and a light saline influence, hints of orange blossom emerging with continued aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and very well-judged acidity. This Montagne Saint-Émilion has a bit of bite, especially on the tensile finish. Berrouet’s magic touch shows here. • Decanter, March 2021, Score: 90

There is both juice and freshness on display here, and the wine opens in the glass effortlessly without trying too hard. The floral side to the fruit also comes out after a minute or two, adding a sense of lightness to the clear power and concentration in the mid palate. It's enjoyable and one to look out for. From the home estate of Jean Claude Berrouet and vinified by his son Jeff. Jane Anson.

  • Jane Anson, July 2021, Score: 92

Jean-Claude Berrouet's home estate, with the talented Jeff Berrouet working alongside his father. Montagne is an appellation that was well-placed to deliver in the dry summer of 2018, and this really is one to look out for, as good as the exceptional 2016 from the property. Redcurrant and blackberry fruits, studded with cracked pepper, tobacco, black tea and cardamom. Thoroughly enjoyable, even more so after a good few hours in a carafe. 20% new oak. Drink from 2022-2034.

Region

Montagne St Emilion

The satellite commune of Montagne St Emilion is the largest appellation of St Emilion in Bordeaux, strewn with limestone and clay hillside vineyards and limestone plateaus. Of all the satellite communes, Montage St Emilion produces some of the deepest and richest wines which are often great value as these wines can be as good as Grand Cru St Emilion. Predominantly Merlot based, this red-wine only AOC traditionally also uses a collection of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon but Malbec and Carmenere are allowed as well.
