    Goedhuis, November 2019

This cuvée sees no oak as Jean-Michel and Frédéric prefer to vinify and mature in concrete tanks so as not to mask the fruit and the terroir. With 65% Grenache married with Syrah and Mourvèdre, the cuvée St Roch is the perfect southern Rhône blend with aromatic summer fruit characters of loganberry and red cherry. This is a very relaxed wine with succulent fruit and a soft, easy finish. Lovely.

Producer

Domaine le Clos de Cazaux

Brothers Jean-Michel and Frédéric Vache run this Southern Rhône estate with passion, determination and a great enthusiasm for their region. With an aversion to oak ageing, they are more interested in expressing the fruit character of the varieties and their terrific terroirs. Alongside this philosophy, late picking, long maceration periods, and extended élevages give the wines their signature primal density. This estate is an excellent source of good value wines.

Region

Vacqueyras

Vacqueyras is one of the newest appellations to emerge from the southern Rhône, moving up from Côtes du Rhône Villages in 1990. As a result, it also is one of the least known. Stylistically, its wines are rich and plump with more complexity and concentration than Côtes du Rhônes, but perhaps slightly less concentration than its neighbouring appellation, Gigondas. Like most things, though, this depends on the producer and vintage. Vacqueyras is made all three colours - red, white and rosé, mostly from 4 varieties - Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan though the red is by far the most dominant. Due to its lesser known reputation, these wines often offer excellent value for money.
