Goedhuis, March 2020
In a relatively short time, the Martin family have established themselves as one of the finest domaines in the Mâconnais village of Davayé. Certified organic since 2010, this St Véran is a charming wine with aromas of white flowers and citrus. Juicy nectarines on the palate are complemented by a delicate creaminess and a vibrant acidity. A terrific all-round white.
Domaine de la Croix Senaillet
"Domaine de la Croix Senaillet" takes its name from a cross that had been given by an ancient mayor of the village called Benoit Senaillet. The records show that the mayor donated the cross to Davayé in 1866 to replace the one that was destroyed in 1793 during the French Revolution. Maurice Martin established the domaine in 1969 and his son Richard took it over in 1990 and was joined by his brother Stephane in 1992. Internationally renowned for making some of St Veran's finest and most elegant wines, this reputation is down to hard work in the vineyards and minimal intervention in the winemaking process.
The vineyards of St Veran lie both to the north and south of the Pouilly Fuisse appellation at the southern tip of the Mâconnais. Only white wines made from the Chardonnay grape qualify. Saint-Véran's wines have more body and structure than a Mâcon Villages wine. They rarely have the power and structure to rival Pouilly Fuisse, but can represent excellent value.
