Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2019

The most open and approachable of Olivier’s wines in its youth, with enticing aromas of lychees and tropical fruits. This is giving, with a subtle generosity and an attractive touch of brioche on the finish.

    Neal Martin, January 2020,
    Score: 91-93

The 2018 Saint-Aubin Les Frionnes 1er Cru comes from deep limestone soils. It has a lifted nose, not unlike the Clos de Meix but slightly more marine-influenced, with touches of shucked oyster shells. The palate is very harmonious on the entry, offering grapefruit and hints of pineapple and leading to a poised, lightly spiced finish. Very fine. 2022 - 2035

  • BURG

    Burghound, June 2020,
    Score: 90-92

A more restrained and quite cool nose features notes of essence of pear, spiced apple and lemongrass. The racy and beautifully delineated medium-bodied flavors are borderline painfully intense while delivering an abundance of minerality on the bone-dry and youthfully austere finale. Good stuff with aging potential. Drink 2026+

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2020,
    Score: 90-92

The limestone in Les Frionnes is much more decomposed than Clos de Meix. There is a touch of reduction in the gunflint style. This is really tight, lots of energy, just not quite in place yet but I adore the finish. Very dense.

Producer

Domaine Hubert Lamy

The Lamy family has worked the vines in St.Aubin since 1640. Today the domaine is run by Olivier Lamy who recently took over from his father. The domaine produces around 8,500 cases of red and white wine from their 16.5 hectares; the vines are spread around the Côte de Beaune villages of Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Santenay. Since 1997 all production has been domaine-bottled; the output is high quality - their Saint-Aubins in particular are often superior to wines from more fashionable villages.

Region

Saint-Aubin

Due west of Puligny and Chassagne lies the little, picturesque village of St. Aubin. With the neighbouring village of Gamay, it produces 2/3 white wine and 1/3 red wine over 230 hectares of vines of which over 3/4 are premier cru. It was one of the last appellations created in only 1970 but has since created an excellent reputation for good value well made Burgundy that can replicatePuligny. Some of the most expressive vineyards are En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.
