  • Goedhuis, December 2019

A very well positioned vineyard on the Puligny side of the appellation. Clos de la Chatenière has a naturally warm microclimate hence it has a mélange of fruit salad flavours: kumquat, guava and mango. A white wine with structure; the characters of almonds and fresh double cream provide an additional degree of complexity. Fabulously appealing.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 89-91

The 2018 Saint-Aubin Clos de la Chatenière 1er Cru was showing a bit of reduction on the nose, with light oyster shell scents developing with aeration. The palate is well balanced with quite a weighty, intense opening. There is real concentration here, and hints of fresh gooseberry and frangipane toward the finish. Very fine. 2021 - 2038

  • Burghound, June 2020, Score: 89-91

A curious nose, at least relative to the prior wines, consists of secondary fermentation aromas and thus not much can be deduced. Otherwise there is good richness to the round, fleshy and less energetic flavors that are not quite as mineral-driven either on the austere, serious and compact finale. As the description confirms, this is somewhat awkward today and tough to read even though it will almost certainly clean up. Drink 2026+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 91-93

Planted 1964. Brisk primrose colour. A little gunflint reduction. A beautifully balanced juicy white fruit with plenty of flesh at the back. This is not one of the ultra-tense cuvées, more a question of generosity of fruit backed by a totally correct acidity. In harmony.

Region

Saint Aubin

Due west of Puligny and Chassagne lies the little, picturesque village of St. Aubin. With the neighbouring village of Gamay, it produces 2/3 white wine and 1/3 red wine over 230 hectares of vines of which over 3/4 are premier cru. It was one of the last appellations created in only 1970 but has since created an excellent reputation for good value well made Burgundy that can replicatePuligny. Some of the most expressive vineyards are En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.
