Tasting Notes

    Goedhuis, December 2019

A favourite vineyard amongst growers, Les Lavières produces a generously styled wine from its clay dominant soils. The Tollots are replanting a section of this vineyard, and so production is currently reduced. Full of hedgerow fruits and hints of fresh coffee beans. A rounded and full style, showing all its colours in its youth.

    Score: 87-89

The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru has a perfumed nose, perhaps just missing a little definition due to the warmth of the growing season. The balanced palate offers sweet black cherries and raspberry fruit. Quite spicy on the midpalate, although it does not quite deliver the complexity of the 2016 or 2017 toward the finish. A Savigny more for early drinking. Drink 2021-2027

  • BURG

    Burghound, April 2020,
    Score: 91

A slightly cooler combination features notes of dark cherry, raspberry and violet along with whiffs of wood and earth. The sleeker, finer and more mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors possess lovely delineation as well as a beguiling texture that also contrasts somewhat with the firm, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This possesses a relatively sophisticated mouthfeel thanks to the fine-grained tannins. Outstanding. Drink 2026+

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2020,
    Score: 88-91

The oldest part of the vineyard dates back to 1943. Clean bright ripe pink purple with some class to the red fruit. Currently showing the oak but it doesn’t matter, sweet juicy fruit and very good length.

Domaine Tollot-Beaut et Fils

The wines of Tollot-Beaut are some of the best we taste every vintage. Uncomplicated, pure and fresh, they epitomize everything that we love about wines from the Côte de Beaune. In addition, their fleshiness and approachability makes them perfect for cynics who claim that Burgundy is not their cup of tea. The 22-hectare domaine has been family-owned for years. Today, the young, friendly and exceptionally bright Nathalie Tollot manages the domaine with her cousins. The wines are vinified fairly traditionally. About 40% of the crop is de-stemmed, though this varies depending on vintage. The wines are fermented in open-top wooden vats before being aged in oak barrels that are 10-50% new. Very lightly fined and filtered before bottling, the resulting wines are often opulent with noticeable density, always clean and superbly pure. Just wonderful Burgundy.

Region

Savigny-lès-Beaune

The picturesque village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, just to the north of Beaune, is a relatively prolific producer in Burgundian terms. Less serious than its neighbours, Pommard and Volnay, these are nonethless delicious wines - perfumed, delicate and elegant. A tiny amount of white is produced.
