Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2019

A very senior village cuvée representing a blend of 65% 1er Cru Fournaux and 35% village lieux dit Fourneaux. The fruit for this cuvée was 50% whole bunch fermented and this is evident in the sweet alpine fruit scent. An appealing feeling of succulence and hint of sucrosity make for a very desirable wine.

    Neal Martin, January 2020,
    Score: 87-89

The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fournaux 1er Cru sees around 10–15% new oak. This is clearly a level up from the Village Cru, offering black currant, raspberry and attractive sous-bois aromas, plus hints of black olive in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins matched with a keen bead of acidity and a grainy-textured, slightly short finish. This Savigny deserves a couple of years in bottle and should drink well for the next decade. 2022 - 2032

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Savigny-lès-Beaune

The picturesque village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, just to the north of Beaune, is a relatively prolific producer in Burgundian terms. Less serious than its neighbours, Pommard and Volnay, these are nonethless delicious wines - perfumed, delicate and elegant. A tiny amount of white is produced.
