Tasting Notes

  • NM

    Neal Martin, January 2020,
    Score: 92-94

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet La Truffière 1er Cru comes from a 0.15-hectare parcel on red clay soils. The bouquet is adorable, offering orange and apricot blossom, crushed rocks and hints of menthol with aeration, and eventually gaining impressive intensity. The palate is, conversely, quite taut and linear, but shows great depth and mineralité, conveying palpable energy on the finish that leaves the tongue tingling. Superb. 2023 - 2042

  • BURG

    Burghound, June 2020,
    Score: 89-92

An all but mute nose requires aggressive swirling to liberate aromas of white flowers, citrus rind and poached pear. The beautifully refined if only moderately dense medium weight flavors brim with minerality that adds a lovely sense of lift to the nicely long and layered finale. This is perhaps not quite as vibrant as the best in the range though it's by no means flat. Drink 2026+

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2020,
    Score: 92-95

Pale primrose. An impressive nose but with more density. Weight too with a little bit of sun on the stones minerality, in the middle of a significant weight of ripe but still white fruit. A pretty weighty Truffière all told with excellent energy.

Domaine Etienne Sauzet

Etienne Sauzet is one of the great estates of Puligny Montrachet, taking its name from current incumbent Emilie Riffault's great grandfather who founded this domaine in the early 1900s. It boasts 15 hecatres of vineyards, comprising four white grands crus in Puligny and Chassagne and nine premiers crus. Today, under Emilie and husband Benoit's direction, their owned vineyards are fully biodynamic and they are one of the flag bearers for the appellation of Puligny.

Region

Puligny Montrachet

Puligny Montrachet is known as the most delicate of the white wine appellations south of Beaune. Its wines tend to be linear and mineral offering delicate floral and orchard fruit aromatics. Its village and premier cru vineyard area total slightly over 200 hectares but almost half of them are premier cru making them one of the highest proportions of quality vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. Several grand cru vineyards are present, the most notable being Le Montrachet and Bâtard Montrachetwhich it shares with neighbouring Chassagne, but it does have the extraordinary Chevalier Montrachet and the tiny Bienvenues Bâtard Montrachet all to itself. There are a handful of red wines grown, but they tend to be quite light and need to be drunk in their youth.
