    To produce a high class second wine takes immense skill. It must represent the ethos of the Grand Vin but be more accessible yet without any weaknesses. This Reserve de la Comtesse is as good as any second wine this vintage. Beautifully perfumed with flavours of blueberries and violets and damsons, it possesses a lovely sweetness of fruit. Pristine and polished, the tannins are extraordinarily silky and provide an additional layer of depth and integrity. Lovely.

    The 2018 Réserve de la Comtesse is a very pretty second wine from Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. Pliant, creamy and inviting, the Reserve is attractive, but also a bit laid back relative to recent vintages in which the Réserve was perhaps a more serious, structured wine. The Réserve is built around a core of younger vine's fruit. The more accessible style is most likely explained by the natural heterogeneity of the vintage itself. The blend is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Tasted four times.

    Most of the plots that were planted since 2011 have gone into this. This second wine represents 41% of the crop. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the very deep purple-black colored 2018 Reserve de la Comtesse opens slowly to offers glimpses and dusty soil, Sichuan pepper, garrigue and tobacco over a core of warm black cherries, cassis and blackberry pie plus a waft of crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with juicy black fruits and loads of earth/mineral nuances, finishing with lovely freshness and a quiet intensity. Very impressive.

    A rich and dense second wine of Pichon Lalande with a full body, round and juicy tannins and a fruit-driven finish. Chewy, too.

    As with the first wine of Comtesse, this is one to look out for in 2018. It’s seductive but with a minerality and pull through the palate joined by plush raspberry and damson fruits – so much depth but also so pretty. As the tannins close in the finish is a little tighter than the mid-palate and when you return to it after tasting the first wine the fruit flavours have been joined by liquorice and touches of woodsmoke, it’s delicious. The split is 50/50 between first and second wine in 2018, with over 90% of the total production used. 1% Cabernet Franc makes up the blend. 9% press wine. 3.85pH, 87IPT. Drinking Window 2024 - 2036

    This is a very successful Réserve with finely tuned fruit and a long, ripe finish. The fruit notes are heightened in this wine with concentration and also an extra level of acidity which means that there is good balance here, too. Nicely structured with fit tannins, this is a remarkable wine for this label.

    Cassis, blackberry, pepper and tobacco notes are in the mix, with good energy on the graphite-edged finish. Shows textbook typicity, and should be ready in the near term after bottling.

    Very dark cherry fruit. Sweeter and riper on the nose than the Pez just tasted, pure, dark and spicy. Much riper than usual. Pencil shavings scent on the palate, lithe and fine tannins, really smooth and gentle, just enough freshness to balance. A gentle touch. Creamy. They have kept lovely harmony. Drink 2023-2033

This 2ème Cru Classé Pauillac estate was once merged with neighbouring Pichon Baron to form a much larger domaine. Due to inheritance problems, it was split in 1850 between only two children - one being Virginie de Lalande née de Pichon Longueville. This 2ème Cru Classé Pauillac estate was once merged with neighbouring Pichon Baron to form a much larger domaine. The Lalande family sold the property in 1925 to Edouard and Louis de Miailhe. It remained in their family until Edouard's daughter, May Eliane de Lencquesaing, sold it to Louis Roederer in 2006. 2012 The current general manager Nicolas Glumineau was appointed in 2012 and was previously employed at Chateau Montrose in St. Estephe. The 89 hectares estate is a true Pauillac powerhouse and one of the most important 'Super Seconds', responsible for making some of the most sumptous and elegant Bordeaux wines.Read less

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
