Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2019

Pernand Vergelesses is slightly cooler than Savigny lès Beaune, delivering additional benefits in 2018, and its wines have a spicier, earthier accent. Here we see an increase to 80% whole bunch fruit, so confident was the domaine in the ripeness of the stalks and pips. With flavours of loganberry and dark fruits, the initial succulent palate gives way to structured grainy tannins and warm volume.

    Neal Martin, January 2020,
    Score: 89-91

The 2018 Pernand-Vergelesses Les Vergelesses 1er Cru comes from a single parcel on red clayey soils. It has an ample bouquet of black cherries mixed with cranberry and hints of fig, nicely defined with impressive intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry. Quite a dense Pernand-Vergelesses, this, with a saline and black-olive-tinged finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Very fine. 2022 - 2032

  • BURG

    Burghound, April 2020,
    Score: 89-92

An attractively spiced nose features notes of violet, black cherry and earth. The racy, intense and extract-rich medium-bodied flavors possess good muscle that carries over to the very firm, slightly warm and sweet finish. I suspect that the sweetness will gradually dissipate. Drink 2028+

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Pernand-Vergelesses

With its neighbours, Ladoix Serrigny and Aloxe-Corton, Pernand Vergelesses has its own village and premier cru appellations but shares the two grand crus: Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay. The limestone marl soil is well-suited to growing Chardonnay and the resulting white wines are crisp and mineral with a good capacity for ageing. Pinot Noir is planted in areas of redder iron-rich soil and the best vineyards produce charmingly soft red wines with classic notes of raspberries and violets.
