Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2019

This impressive premier cru faces the hillside of Corton Charlemagne. The cool east-facing white marl slope makes it an ideal site for growing Chardonnay with a high degree of purity. The warmer summer conditions have allowed for a more generous style, with flavours of white peach and hints of Jersey cream. Appealing balance, with an expanse of fruit that carries through into a line of energy and freshness on the finish.

    Neal Martin, January 2020,
    Score: 87

The 2018 Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc En Caradeux 1er Cru has a rather simple nose that lacks some personality. The palate is clean and fresh with orange zest and light honeyed tones, although it requires more tension on the finish. Drink 2020-2024

  • BURG

    Burghound, June 2020,
    Score: 89

Smoky aromas of pear, apple, lemon zest and a whiff of wood precede the very round, delicious and plump flavors that possess good mid-palate fat while exhibiting a fine bead of minerality that adds a sense of lift to the lingering finish. This balanced effort should drink well early on but has the stuffing to reward 5 to 8 years of cellaring as well. Drink 2025+

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2020,
    Score: 89

Planted in 1986 on 161/49 in the upper part of their block in the days when that rootstock still worked. Being in the lower, 1er Cru, section they get some flesh here. White fruit nicely polished, racy and delicious, excellent tension and the fruit fattens out very stylishly.

Domaine Rapet Père et Fils

Domaine Rapet Pere et Fils can trace its history back as far as 1765. The Estate comprises 18 hectares of vines in the villages of Pernand-Vergelesses, Savigny les Beaune, Aloxe Corton and Beaune. Located between Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, the Pernand Vergelesses vineyard, tucked away in the green surroundings of a quiet valley, begins at the foot of Corton hill. It is the only vineyard to offer the whole range of vintages, in both white and red wines. Ageing of both red and white wines occurs in oak barrels (30% new for white and 20% new for red). All winery processes are undertaken to minimise the handling of the grapes.

Region

Pernand-Vergelesses

With its neighbours, Ladoix Serrigny and Aloxe-Corton, Pernand Vergelesses has its own village and premier cru appellations but shares the two grand crus: Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay. The limestone marl soil is well-suited to growing Chardonnay and the resulting white wines are crisp and mineral with a good capacity for ageing. Pinot Noir is planted in areas of redder iron-rich soil and the best vineyards produce charmingly soft red wines with classic notes of raspberries and violets.
