  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 91-93

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Village, courtesy of the lieu-dit of Aux Athets, has a pure bouquet of black cherry, blueberry and light violet aromas that convey a Vosne-like allure. The palate is, again, very pure, with a disarmingly silky texture, a fine bead of acidity and great precision and length on the finish. This is an outstanding village cru. 2023 - 2035

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 89-91

All but invisible wood easily allows the softly spicy though overtly earthy dark currant and forest floor scents to be appreciated. The punchy yet caressing and velvety medium-bodied flavors possess a lovely texture as well as focused power on the less refined but more complex finale. This isn't super-dense but I very much like the delivery. Worth checking out. Drink: 2028+ Outstanding Top value

  • Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 90-92

Cathiard's 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges exhibais aromas of sweet red berries, cassis, rich soil tones and smoked meats, followed by a medium to full-bodied, succulent and elegantly rendered palate that's deep and serious, concluding with a lively, mineral finish.

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
