Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, September 2020

A brilliant Montagny from a distinguished domaine with extensive holdings in Puligny Montrachet. The Boillots put their winemaking expertise to great effect in the Côte Chalonnaise vineyards of Montagny. The 2018 shows lovely citrus and stone fruit flavours on the nose with hints of camomile and brioche. On the palate the fruit is gently carried by a refreshing acidity and minerality which all flow through onto a long finish.

    Score: 90

10,000 bottles are produced of this single vineyard 1er Cru and for me it represents a big step up. Clear pale colour with a touch more primary fruit to the nose compared to the regular 1er cru. The fruit marches nicely across the palate, not too ripe, a little greengage, with an excellent juicy finish.

Producer

Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot

Jean-Marc and his children Lydie and Benjamin consistently make some of the most appealing and forward drinking wines from their significant holdings across Burgundy. Their range of Puligny Montrachet premiers crus shows impressive individual distinction. Jean-Marc’s family has a long and distinguished history in Burgundy. His grandfather was Etienne Sauzet, from whom he inherited vineyards in the early 1990s. He spent his early career working for the family domaine, Henri Boillot, before making the wine at Domaine Olivier Leflaive. In the 1980s he began making wine from his own vineyards which were significantly expanded with his Sauzet inheritance of an outstanding array of Puligny premier cru sites. The family have exported their uncomplicated but precise winemaking philosophy further south to the Côte Chalonnaise, and more recently, Mâcon.

Region

Montagny

Situated to the south of the Côte Chalonnaise in Burgundy, Montagny is an all white wine appellation. The wines have a good balance of body and acidity and the best can be described as "mini-Meursaults". Historically all wines could be classified as Premier Cru if they contained alcohol of 11.5% or higher. Today the vineyards of Montagny are classified similar to other appellations based on their terroir and positioning, with almost two-thirds being eligible for Premier Cru status.
