Tasting Notes
-
Jancis Robinson, May 2021,
Score: 17Dark-blue fruit on the nose, smudged with kohl and sketching charcoal. They suggest five spice, and I can get that pretty much exactly. Lots of black-olive tapenade bitterness and meatiness building into game and char and eucalypt and iron. Delicate violet florals dance over the rain-wet-wrought-iron clench of the finish. Tannins are both rugged and polished – cowboy movie star. A hint of Moroccan leather dipped in midnight-blue ink. Long and dramatic but elegant. Drink 2023-2030.

Region
Margaret River
Certainly the best wine area in Western Australia, if not the whole country. The idyllic scenery of Margaret River (surf-lapped rocky coast, towering karri forest, abundant wildlife) has only been home to wine production since the 1970s. Hard to believe given the quality of the Chardonnays and Cabernets produced by the likes of Leeuwin, Cullen, Moss Wood and Vasse Felix. Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon all also thrive here. The climate is mild, tempered by the Indian Ocean and the drying wind known as the Freemantle Doctor, and infertile red loam soils are the most sought after for viticulture.
