Goedhuis, December 2019
This vineyard is tucked in the very farthest north-west part of the village and enjoys the cooling influence of its 350m elevation in warm summers. This 2018 has really benefitted from its location and is a real showstopper. With lovely volume and full of dark cassis fruit, this is very intense. The gorgeous ripe fruit is balanced by a delicious bite of freshness that flows through the palate. Quite excellent.
Neal Martin, January 2020,
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles 1er Cru has a pretty bouquet of vivacious red currant, raspberry and crushed strawberry fruit, along with light rose petal notes and hints of quince and orange pith. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins, and a keen thread of acidity lends real tension and precision toward the finish. This is one of Boillot’s best 2018s. 2023 - 2038
Burghound, January 2020,
Here there is a particular kind of reduction that the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis, or black currant blossom; this kind of reduction tends to dissipate easily though it does dominate the fruit when it's present. The refined and highly energetic flavors possess a lovely mid-palate texture with plenty of minerality while exhibiting good persistence on the somewhat skinny and lean finish. This may well flesh out with a few years of bottle age and my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2025+
Jasper Morris MW, January 2020,
Very dense vibrant purple black, bristling with energy. Lively raspberry and fresh blackberry, still with this all-pervading sense of energy. The richest and densest Evocelles I have tasted but all kept perfectly in proportion and a very long fresh finish.
Domaine Louis Boillot
Louis is the seventh generation of vignerons in Burgundy from a family who is mostly known for their Côte de Beaune wines such as Pommard and Volnay however, several Côte de Nuits appellations including Gevrey Chambertin were added to the repertoire in 1978. Many of these are parcels of extremely old vines, and the wines have a natural concentration and silky persistence. Today Louis vinifies and ages his wines in Chambolle Musigny in the same cellar as his other half, Ghislaine Barthod. In fact, it has been said that his influences have helped create the celestial beauties that have risen from her vineyards. Both are ably assisted by their son, Clément. He has been instrumental in Louis Boillot’s recent purchase of vineyards in Beaujolais, Moulin à Vent, where these skilled Burgundians bring their expertise to the Gamay grape.
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
