  • Goedhuis, December 2019

A superb contrast to the Combe Aux Moines. This is a bigger more obvious style, with smoky dark fruit characters and hints of black olive. This Gevrey has a warming richness to it and the granular tannins show off its earthy terroir.

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 90-93

A cooler and more restrained nose speaks of essence of red cherry, black raspberry and an abundance of sauvage and forest floor elements. There is better volume and intensity to the bigger and more imposingly-scaled flavors that are also more obviously mineral-inflected on the dusty, grippy and even slightly chewy finish. Patience strongly advised. Outstanding

  • Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 92-94

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques is showing very well, displaying notes of cassis, wild plums, smoke and rich sole tones, framed by classy new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and enveloping, with ripe acids, powdery tannins and a long, fleshy finish. Faiveley now owns just under one hectare in this prime premier cru.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020

Ex Dupont-Tisserandot. Fine red-crimson colour. The nose is discreet, but with some intrinsic detail, then quite a volume of sweet red fruit, some cherries, some crushed strawberries, and quite a long follow through.

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
