Tasting Notes
-
Vinous, September 2020,
Score: 100The 2018 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is precise and fresh on the intense, highly concentrated, lime and lemon-scented nose with aromas of hand-stirred white Lindt chocolate and dried apricot as well as an excitingly delicate and flinty notes that add a coolish component. Rich and smoothly textured yet with highly refined acidity, this is a fabulous yet still very sweet TBA with great concentration, delicacy and honey sweetness. A wine made for eternity. Drink 2040-2120.
Producer
Dr. Ernst Loosen

Worldly, dynamic and charismatic, Ernst Loosen is an undeniable character. He has been at the helm of his 200-year-old family domaine since 1988. With his initiative and savoir faire, over the years he has helped re-establish the Mosel on a wider scale as one of the most exciting wine growing areas in the world. Its terroir is exceptional, composed primarily of grey-blue and red slate that climb up to tremendously steep cliffs - the steepest in the world to be exact. Due to the Middle Mosel's lack of actual soil and incredibly good drainage, most of the vines are not grafted onto American rootstocks as phylloxera cannot survive. As a result, the vines grow exceptionally slowly creating wines that tend to be wonderfully pure, tender and focused. Ernst's holdings are in the some of the most reputable vineyards.
