Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, November 2019

This wine was a little backward in its aromas at the time of tasting in November, however, in the palate its potential really shone through. Direct blackcurrant flavours are supported by hints of mocha and cinnamon. A full and powerful wine, showing both strength and great length. Masses of aging potential and Grand Cru pedigree. Superb.

Producer

Domaine Ponsot

Domaine Ponsot is an atypical but outstanding domaine in Morey St Denis. Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations.

Region

Charmes-Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin is one of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. On gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north, gravelly soil forces the vines to work hard. Relatively large for a Grand Cru appellation, it is hard to generalise about the wines. Often intensely perfumed and seductive, Charmes-Chambertin can be approachable earlier than its Grand Crus neighbours.
