Goedhuis, August 2021
The Cotes de Nuits most seductive appellation and Nicolas Potel has produced a beautiful example with this fine 2018 wine. Deep blackberry colour, this is an abundantly scented wine with strong characters of ripe summer fruits. The palate is about harmony, beautifully sensual, with its rich volume and soft lacey tannins. Beautifully rewarding, this is a joy. Drink 2021 – 2026
Burghound, April 2020,
A slightly fresher nose displays an equally spicy blend of red, blue and black pinot fruit trimmed in discreet violet wisps. There is better refinement if not quite the same concentration to the medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the bitter pit fruit and youthfully austere finale. Drink 2023+
Maison Roche de Bellene
Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.
The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
