From a small parcel of older vines situated in Roddi, the Bricco Ambrogio was first released in 2007. At 270m above sea level, the vineyard here is both well-ventilated and well-exposed, allowing the vines to receive plenty of sunlight without the risk of sunburn. Achieving perfect ripeness is therefore guaranteed and, as such, the Grimaldis can afford to ferment on the skins for longer periods, which adds a wonderful concentration of fruit and greater weight to the final wine. This has an engaging nose of ripe red cherry fruit with fleshy peach and watermelon, with subtle wafts of smoke and seared meat. The palate is juicy, generous and ripe and shows the same crystalline red fruit that we find on the nose. There is a bright line of acidity and freshness to match the slick tannins and a wonderful smokiness on the fruity finish.

ML, June 2022, Score: 92
From a vineyard site in Roddi with classic Sant'Agata marl soils and fossils, the Bruna Grimaldi 2018 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio shows pretty harmony and balance, with a considerably softer character that finishes with very smooth and silky tannins. The fruit is compact and fresh with wild cherry and cassis. That more tart flavor profile cedes to floral notes and some earthy tones as well in this production of 4,500 bottles. Drink 2024-2037.

Piedmont
Piedmont is located in the north western corner of Italy. Though several grape varieties are prominent such as Dolcetto, Barbera and Moscato, it is Nebbiolo that reigns supreme. It produces wines that are not particularly deep in colour, yet they are perfumed, powerful and can age for many years. Due to the ethereal nature of the Nebbiolo grape and the numerous single vineyard wines, many compare top examples to grand cru Burgundies of the Côte de Nuits.Mountainous, its vineyards are cut into the hillsides forming terraces reminiscent of the Mosel Valley in Germany and the northern Rhone Valley in France. The two most notable appellations are Barolo and Barbaresco.
