Tasting Notes

Neal Martin, January 2019,
Score: 86-88The 2017 Vosne-Romanée le Clos d’Eugénie is matured in one-third new oak and includes 60% whole clusters, from what was apparently the largest crop produced, at 42hl/ha, after the two green harvests. This displays more red fruit than the Village Cru and also slightly better delineation. The palate is balanced with saturated tannin, a fine bead of acidity, moderate depth and a touch of dark chocolate toward the linear finish. Perhaps like the Village Cru, I would like to see more Pinot Noir expression.

Burghound, January 2019,
Score: 89-91Here the expressive nose is at once spicier and a bit more elegant as well with its array of more evident floral influence on the black cherry aromas that are trimmed in a discreet application of wood. The rich and relatively full-bodied flavors possess a velvety texture thanks to the sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the moderately firm tannic spine shaping the delicious and lingering finish that is slightly firmer. This will need at least a few years of cellaring first and should easily reward up to a decade. Drink 2025+

Producer
Domaine d'Eugénie

Domaine d'Eugénie was born following the acquisition of René Engel estate by François Pinault, alsoowner of Château Latour in Pauillac during the summer 2006. The estate is situated in Vosne-Romanée, in the heart of La Côte de Nuits between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Gevrey Chambertin. This village is considered to be the treasure of big wines of Burgundy. The vineyard is about 6.5 hectares and extends onto the communes of Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot et Flagey-Echezeaux. The estate is managed by Frédéric Engerer who is the President at Château Latour in Pauillac.
Region
Côte de Nuits-Villages
This communal appellation covers the vineyards of Fixin, Brochon, Premeaux, Comblanchien, and Corgoloin. Spread along the length of the Cotes de Nuits the wines of the different communes are, unsurprisingly, varied, reflecting a range of different exposures and nuances of soild type. The vast majority of production is red, with just a smattering of Chardonnay grown. The reds can offer very good value from the better producers.
