Goedhuis, November 2018
Les Suchots is wedged between the two great blocks of grands crus in Vosne Romanée and Flagey Echézeaux, and it often demands time in the cellar before emerging in its glorious old age. This Suchots is likely to follow this pattern, being extremely tightly wound in its youth. It has a perfumed, classical nose, and a saline, savoury length. Its primary fruits will come into their own after some time in bottle. One for the patient.

Neal Martin, Janaury 2019,
Score: 93-95The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru already conveys a sense of completeness on the focused nose; black plum, sous-bois, hints of graphite and sea spray all lend complexity. The medium-bodied palate of sappy red berry fruit is quite spicy and lively. Touches of brown spice and clove lend more complexity to the very persistent finish. This is a superb offering from Grivot this year. 2022 - 2045

Burghound, January 2019,
Score: 91-93Generous wood fights somewhat with the ripe and ultra-spicy nose of cassis, plum, violet, lavender and orange pekoe tea. The opulently rich, succulent and enveloping medium-bodied flavors brim with dry extract while delivering excellent length on the youthfully austere but well-balanced finale. This is very Suchots in basic character and should amply repay extended cellaring. Drink 2032+

Decanter, December 2018,
Score: 95Always one of my favourite Vosne premiers crus from Mathilde and Etienne Grivot, this textured, stylish, deftly oaked red has all the most appealing features of the 2017 vintage, with lots of sumptuous, summer-pudding fruit, filigree tannins and a foundation of acidity. It's deceptively forward, as this has the minerality and focus to age. Drinking Window 2022 - 2030

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.
Region
Vosne Romanée
The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
