Tasting Notes

Neal Martin, January 2019,
Score: 92-94The 2017 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru has perhaps the most "airy" bouquet, it is very transparent at the moment, but the palate is much tighter and backward. There is good backbone here, but it is sulking and it is probably one of the Domaine’s wines that will require the longest bottle age. It has an almost Pommard-like austerity towards the finish. Excellent but one of the more challenging wines from the domaine. 2023 - 2045

Burghound, April 2019,
Score: 92-94Here the reticent nose is at once ripe yet cool with a lovely layered quality to the mix of violet, spice, dark berry liqueur and Asian-style tea aromas. The super-sleek, intense, mineral-driven and refined medium weight flavors that culminate in a very serious, youthfully austere and built-to-age finish that just goes on and on. A classic Taillepieds that will require extended patience.

Wine Advocate, January 2019,
Score: 91-93+The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds exhibits brooding aromas of plums, cherries, dark chocolate, grilled meat and pungent soil tones, making for one of wilder bouquets in the cellar this year. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and chewy, with broad structural shoulders that are more typical of Taillepieds than they are of the 2017 vintage, defined by tangy acids and fine-grained but rich tannins. This may well be the wine that demands the greatest patience this year.

Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Arriving at the family Château in Volnay and standing in the famed Clos des Ducs overlooking the village and its other 1er crus below always gives me a huge thrill. This is everything that Burgundy is all about; history dating back to 1507, and back to 1804 for the Angerville family and their ancestors, great breeding in some of the finest vineyards in the Cote d'Or and finally anability to make Pinot Noir at its very purist and best.
Region
Volnay
A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
