Tasting Notes

Neal Martin, January 2019,
Score: 91-93The 2017 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru has an elegant, correct, almost conservative bouquet, a bit like a Swiss watch in terms of its precision. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine silky tannin, perfect acidity, very pure with moderate substance, hints of orange zest and marmalade towards the vivacious finish. You could almost drink this now. 2021 - 2040

Burghound, April 2019,
Score: 91-93A softly spiced nose grudgingly reveals wafting and perfumed aromas of plum liqueur, violet and a hint of sandalwood. The medium weight flavors are not quite as dense as those of the Frémiets but they're finer still with plenty of the hallmark minerality suffusing the classy and impeccably well-balanced finale. This Zen-like effort should be approachable after only 5 to 7 years of cellaring if that's your preference.

Wine Advocate, January 2019,
Score: 91-93The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is one of the more ethereal wines in the cellar, exhibiting classy aromas of red cherries, spices, rose petal and rock salt. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fine-boned and satiny, with delicate but chalky structuring tannins, bright acids and lovely purity of fruit. I suspect it will improve further before it's bottled.

Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Arriving at the family Château in Volnay and standing in the famed Clos des Ducs overlooking the village and its other 1er crus below always gives me a huge thrill. This is everything that Burgundy is all about; history dating back to 1507, and back to 1804 for the Angerville family and their ancestors, great breeding in some of the finest vineyards in the Cote d'Or and finally anability to make Pinot Noir at its very purist and best.
Region
Volnay
A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
