Tasting Notes

  • WA

    Wine Advocate, September 2019,
    Score: 96+

This has less aromatic exuberance and is a more serious vintage with good concentration and weight, not as aerial as the 2016. They increased the amount of wine matured in larger 2,500-liter foudres instead of barrique. This is more powerful, structured and concentrated, like a drier version of the 2015, with some grainy tannins, more acidity, more austerity and less primary fruit. The tannins have some grip (the earlier harvest perhaps?) and might need a little bit of time in bottle, and the wine seems to have what it takes to develop nicely in bottle.

  • JS

    James Suckling, September 2019,
    Score: 99

The aromas of blackberries, cedar, sandalwood and black tea are compelling. Black olives. Rosemary and sage undertones. Full-bodied, rich and powerful Seña with impressive and powerful tannins, yet harmony and balance. Fruit-forward. Lightly chewy. Fresh and energetic wine in a hot year.

  • TA

    Tim Atkin, September 2019,
    Score: 96

Showing layers of berry fruit, cedarwood, vanilla spice and tannic grip, it’s concentrated yet balanced with impressive freshness and vibrancy and top notes of violets and wild herbs. One of the best Señas yet.

    Producer Note, September 2019

Of a bright, garnet red color with beautiful violet sparkles, the 2017 vintage of Seña unwinds in a display of attractive aromas of blueberries, cherries, some cloves, violets and cassis, framed by soft pastry notes, and a delicate final touch of licorice. In the mouth it is juicy, very fresh and lively, with tannins that provide support and structure to a wine with amazing persistence and personality, and that will age gracefully over time. This is perhaps one of the most complete and definitive versions of Seña that we have crafted so far. Francisco Baettig, Winemaker

Region

Aconcagua Valley

The Aconcagua Valley is one of the more northerly wine producing regions in Chile. Inland hot dry conditions and alluvial soils produce fine red wines. The more temperate climate towards the Pacific coast can result in high quality Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
