Tasting Notes

    Goedhuis, November 2018

The Tollots are replanting a section of this vineyard, and so production is reduced at the moment. This is a vibrant and charming example of the 2017 vintage. It is a perfumed, pretty style that showed crunchy cranberry fruit on tasting in the summer and had put on some luscious weight by November. The tannins are particularly smooth and sweet.

The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru is back after being frosted over in 2016, although there is a little less in terms of quantity since 0.75 hectares was pulled up for replanting. It has a slightly muted bouquet at first, featuring cranberry, crushed strawberry and a light marine scent. The palate is well balanced and very elegant, with a fine bead of acidity and a silky-smooth, easygoing finish that suggests it will constitute fine early drinking. 2020 - 2026

Here the expressive if cool nose offers another step up in both elegance and complexity offering as it does notes of red currant, cassis, anise and spiced tea. There is a finer mouth feel to the more mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors that possess solid density before concluding in a sneaky long and well-balanced finish. This needs to add a bit of depth but the material is present such that more should develop. Drink 2024+

Light cherry red. That sour, tangy red fruit on the nose with the wildness of rose hip not the sweetness of strawberry. A little more fruit sweetness on the palate, merest hint of vanilla. Pure, light-bodied and finely textured. Pure fruit pleasure.

Domaine Tollot-Beaut et Fils

The wines of Tollot-Beaut are some of the best we taste every vintage. Uncomplicated, pure and fresh, they epitomize everything that we love about wines from the Côte de Beaune. In addition, their fleshiness and approachability makes them perfect for cynics who claim that Burgundy is not their cup of tea. The 22-hectare domaine has been family-owned for years. Today, the young, friendly and exceptionally bright Nathalie Tollot manages the domaine with her cousins. The wines are vinified fairly traditionally. About 40% of the crop is de-stemmed, though this varies depending on vintage. The wines are fermented in open-top wooden vats before being aged in oak barrels that are 10-50% new. Very lightly fined and filtered before bottling, the resulting wines are often opulent with noticeable density, always clean and superbly pure. Just wonderful Burgundy.

Region

Savigny-lès-Beaune

The picturesque village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, just to the north of Beaune, is a relatively prolific producer in Burgundian terms. Less serious than its neighbours, Pommard and Volnay, these are nonethless delicious wines - perfumed, delicate and elegant. A tiny amount of white is produced.
