Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, November 2018

This respected lieu dit lies just below 1er Cru Champeaux on the northern edge of the village. Flavours of dark cherries and sweet bramble fruits, this is a tighter more intense wine than the straight village cuvee. Its more muscular character is supported by a crunchy freshness of fruit on the finish.

    Neal Martin, January 2019,
    Score: 85-87

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs is completely de-stemmed and matures in 60% new oak. This has quite a precocious bouquet that shows just a touch of VA compared to the other samples from the domaine. The palate is very sweet and candied with pure black cherry and boysenberry fruit. Perhaps juxtaposed against the cuvées with whole bunches it feels just a little monotone on the finish. I might have picked this slightly earlier. 2020 - 2025

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2019,
    Score: 89-91

A notably ripe nose reflects notes of mocha, humus, dark berries and a pretty whiff of floral character. There is once again good volume and vibrancy to the agreeably textured medium-bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality that helps to add lift to the youthfully austere finale. This too is a fine Gevrey villages. Drink 2025+

Producer

Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.

Region

Gevrey-Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
