Tasting Notes
-
Goedhuis, November 2018
The family own 4 hectares of Gevrey village split amongst 11 different parcels. A deep, dense wine full of mocha and dark fruits with a touch of oak lacquer. Rich, fleshy and expressive in its youth.

Neal Martin, January 2019,
Score: 87-89The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is the customary blending of ten parcels. It is interesting to compare this with the non-sulphur blend. There is more fruit on the nose: black cherries and raspberry, a subtle floral aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a little more weight than the non-SO2 with a quite dense and grippy finish. I would just like a little more flesh here and more length. 2020 - 2028

Burghound, Janaury 2019,
Score: 87-90A cool, pure and airy array consists of notes of red and dark currant along with plenty of earth characters. The racy, intense and beautifully well-detailed flavors offer good persistence and acceptable complexity on the youthfully austere finale. Drink 2024+

Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.
Region
Gevrey-Chambertin
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
