Tasting Notes
-
Goedhuis, June 2019
With scented red cherry fruits on the nose, on the palate it is a fine example of the appellation. Very Pinot in character, but this has a sense of intensity and structure. Full in the mouth, layered and textured and the finish is one of long, sweet berry fruits. Extremely appealing.

Jancis Robinson, February 2020,
Score: 17++Great purity and focus to the raspberry fruit, with floury tannic feel and loads of liquorice and dark chocolate. Has the severity of Gevrey, but the generosity of fruit keeps it very moreish, and the finish has a charming spiciness. Layered and lengthy. (RH) 13.5%. Drink 2020 – 2033

Producer
Laurent Ponsot

Laurent Ponsot is one of Burgundy’s most internationally renowned winemakers. In 2017 he formally left his family domaine in Morey St Denis, and struck out on his own with a new winemaking facility in Gilly-lès- Cîteaux from where he now runs his solo project, started in 2015, full-time. He had been instrumental in Domaine Ponsot’s rise to fame, and had built a reputation as a maverick winemaker with his unique style that combined late harvesting, destemming, and complete aversion to new oak in the cellar. His wines are concentrated and long lived, and have won him admirers the world over. He is a passionate campaigner and prominent activist in the fight against fake wine on the secondary market. Having left his family domaine in the hands of his sisters, Laurent is joined by his son, Clément, at his new project, and together they are continuing to make their hugely exciting wines. Much of the fruit comes from his share of the family vineyards that remained with him after his departure, whilst the new project has given him the opportunity to explore new appellations.
Region
Gevrey Chambertin
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
