  • Goedhuis, November 2018

Named after the source of a spring to the village, the east/west aspect of this vineyard affords sunshine exposure throughout the day. This is a delicious cuvée showing the full maturity of the fruit. Lots of freshly picked raspberry flavours. This is a very silky style with soft tannins. One can feel the warmth of fruit, but this is a beautifully balanced Gevrey.

  • Neal Martin, September 2021, Score: 86

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru offers a lot of smoky bacon on the nose, which is quite reduced and possibly has some brettanomyces issues, occluding the terroir. The almost mouth-puckering palate follows suit with drying tannins. Severe and lacking fruit on the finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Drink 2021 - 2025

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 87-89

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fonteny 1er Cru comes from a cold microclimate exposed to the cooling air coming down the Combe de Lavaux. It has a well defined bouquet with blackcurrant, wild strawberry and traces of blue fruit, although the 100% new oak tends to dominate. The palate is medium-bodied with dense tannin, a fine bead of acidity, chewy in the mouth with a sinewy finish. Hopefully it will gain more finesse and terroir expression once the oak is fully subsumed. 2023 - 2035

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 90-92

Sérafin has traditionally used a relatively high proportion of new wood and it shows as there is both wood toast and menthol sitting atop the moderately deeply pitched aromas of plum, earth, humus and a whiff of leather. There is a bit more refinement though still plenty of muscle and punch to the more evidently mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that display both good richness but also plenty of youthful austerity on the even more firmly structured finale. Fonteny typically requires extended aging to reveal its true personality and this will be no exception, indeed my suggested range of 15 or so years may not be quite enough. Drink 2032+

The Sérafin family are part of the establishment in Gevrey Chambertin. From when he took over from his father in the 1960 until his recent retirement, if you ever want to get in touch with Christian, you either had to call him as the rooster crowed in the morning or long after the sun had set. The rest of the time, he was working out in the vines or deep in his cellars. The domaine is now run by cousins Frédérique and Karine who are continuing the family tradition of making bold and structured wines. Their Pinots benefit from a period of bottle age and typically express fine tertiary characteristics. They do not fine or filter their wines, and only rack when necessary. Not shy of new oak, they use up to 50% on their straight Bourgogne and often 100% on the rest of their cuvées depending on the concentration. The wines tend to be ample and fleshy, and the richest ones need some cellaring in order to better integrate the spicy, cedarwood flavours.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
