  • Goedhuis, November 2018

This owes its name to the Prior of the Abbaye de Cluny. The monastery had historically owned all the great Gevrey Chambertin vineyards. The high proportion of clay in the soil contributes to a full-bodied wine with power and structure. Full of winter berry fruits, cinnamon and nutmeg. This has bags of personality and will age very well.

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 92-94

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru matures with 25% whole bunches and 60% new oak. It has a very harmonious and expressive bouquet with exuberant scents of black cherries, kirsch, strawberry and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, very well focused with a discrete mintiness towards the tensile finish. Excellent. 2022 - 2038

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 89-92

An expressive and agreeably fresh nose combines notes of red cherry, currant, earth and a whiff of humus. The palate impression is one of generosity, even opulence as the medium-bodied flavors really fan out on the saline-inflected finish. Once again this is not especially complex but the underlying material appears to have slightly more stuffing and thus more depth is more likely to develop. Drink 2025+

  • Decanter, December 2018, Score: 95

Two parcels, one young and one very old, make up this complex, scented premier cru located to the east of Mazis-Bas. With 25% whole bunches and 50% new wood, it's a fine, spicy, detailed red with polished tannins and supporting acidity. Drinking Window 2025 - 2029

They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
