Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, November 2018
This comes from one of the very best parcels of this famous vineyard at the top of the Clos, next door to the Château. An exemplary wine in 2017. Its concentration is the result of both leaf plucking and green harvesting to achieve maximum ripeness. A wine with succulent opulence, beautiful summer pudding flavours and a long powerful finish.

Neal Martin, Janaury 2019,
Score: 92-94The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is completely de-stemmed and matures in 80% new oak. It has an expressive and aromatic bouquet with pretty blueberry, raspberry and iodine aromas that burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very effervescent from the start with vivid red and black fruit infused with orange zest and light fig notes. Very fine. 2022 - 2040

Burghound, January 2019,
Score: 89-92Firm reduction overshadows the fruit at present. More positively, there is excellent energy and density to the powerful and muscular broad-shouldered flavors that possess a healthy level of the same on the austere, rustic and bitter cherry-inflected finish that is a bit clipped. Like the Bonnes Mares, this is somewhat awkward and while it may harmonize, I'm less certain that this will come together though to be clear, I would not expect it to be a poor wine either. Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.
