Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, July 2019

A broad and mouth coating style with appealing characters of caramelised toffee and hints of freshly cooked croissant. A very rewarding wine which gives immediate youthful appeal.

  • BURG

    Burghound, June 2020,
    Score: 92

A deft application of wood frames the much more floral-scented aromas of various white orchard fruit and cool citrus wisps. There is a really beguiling sense of underlying tension to the delicious, well-delineated and solidly concentrated flavors that are unusually refined in the context of what is typical for Maltroie, all wrapped in a complex, focused and impressively persistent finish. This is excellent and notably better than the quality that I usually find with the average Maltroie. Drink 2025+ Outstanding

Producer

Coffinet Duvernay

The Coffinet family are very much part of Chassagne Montrachet’s wine aristocracy, having owned vineyards in the village since the mid-1800s. As with many Burgundian families, there are many offshoots, the result of generations of intermarriage with other famous local names. Our latest new discovery stems from Fernand Coffinet, whose daughter Laura met Philippe Duvernay from Rully, to create the exciting under-the-radar estate of Domaine Coffinet-Duvernay. Their 7 hectares of vines are split between village, eight different Premiers Crus and a gem of a parcel of Grand Cru.

Region

Chassagne-Montrachet

The white wines of Chassagne Montrachet can be difficult to distinguish from Puligny. At their most typical they are slightly fleshier and more hedonistic, but are often just as mineral and refined making the two almost inseparable. When distinguishable, they offer notes of honeysuckle, lime blossom and honey. Many have become quite approachable when young. It is larger than Puligny with vineyards totalling over 330 hectares. Though it shares both the grand cru vineyards of Le Montrachet and Bâtard Montrachet, it has sole ownership of the miniscule Criots Bâtard Montrachet. Similar to Puligny, Chassagne also grows Pinot Noir, which can be austere when young. A small amount of red Chassagne is also made.
