Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2017

With a reserved scented nose, the palate follows with hints of dark chocolate and summer berries. This is an easy style with the characteristic sweet fruit flavours of the vintage and a light fresh finish.

  • BURG

    Burghound, April 2019,
    Score: 85

A ripe and spicy if not especially fresh nose offers reasonably good breadth with its black cherry, raspberry, violet and softly menthol-inflected aromas. The lighter weight (though not dilute) flavors possess acceptable verve though the finish is short and dry enough to compromise the sense of balance. This is hard to like though it should be better with food. Drink 2020+

  • JR

    Jancis Robinson, November 2017,
    Score: 16

30% new oak. Barrel sample. Very dark with black core. More immediate, sweeter and riper than the Domaine de Bellene style. Super-sweet dark cherry aroma. Riper and darker and richer. Still with that firm tannic finesse but more rounded and less precise in its freshness. Rounded and generous on the finish. Drink 2020-2026 (JH)

Maison Roche de Bellene

Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.

Region

Vosne-Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
