Goedhuis, December 2017
Nicolas owns an excellent parcel of Suchots, and usually vinifies this vineyard under his Domaine label. Sadly, frost prevented a workable volume reaching the winery, and so he supplemented it with some purchased fruit, which he vinified and raised in his own cellars along with the domaine fruit. Therefore, this year it is marketed under his ‘Bellene’ label (not to be confused with the Domaine de Bellene or Roche de Bellene labels). The 2016 has a wonderful smoothness and a full, mouth-filling length, denoting its high calibre position amongst the Vosne premiers crus.

Neal Martin, December 2017,
Score: 88-90The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots, taken from cask and due for racking in February, offers ripe red cherries, bilberry and hints of marmalade on the forward and expressive nose. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, quite firm in the mouth, masculine with a slightly stolid finish that needs to find more grace and opulence. Hopefully racking will address those issues. Drink 2021-2032

Maison Roche de Bellene

Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.
Region
Vosne Romanée
The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
