Goedhuis, December 2017
Named after the Boudots family who once owned this field lying alongside Vosne Romanée’s Malconsorts. Always a star performer in this cellar, the 2016 does not disappoint. Although a little closed on the nose, the palate assails the senses, with its richly generous fruit. It balances charm with Malconsorts muscle. High class in every way.

Neal Martin, December 2017,
Score: 89-91The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots is the last vintage that comprises all the vines since half the vineyard was pulled up, as the oldest vines—the most venerable older than Etienne Grivot's father—are no longer productive. It has a perfumed nose, rose petals and violet infusing the red and black fruit, understated at first but gradually unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very tensile, but I felt this was just missing some matière and depth toward the conservative finish. I wanted it to give me more. Maybe it will with time? Drink 2020-2035

Burghound, January 2018,
Score: 91-94Here the wood treatment isn't subtle though neither is it sufficient to overshadow the wonderfully fresh and layered nose of blue pinot fruit, cassis, earth and broad range of spice elements. The mouthfeel of the broad-shouldered flavors is equally seductive and even sleeker but despite the generous mid-palate there is solid muscle and a firm core of tannins supporting the powerful and driving finish. As big as this is, it still manages to remain refined and well-balanced. Lovely stuff but once again, extended patience will be required if you wish to experience this at its peak. Outstanding. Drink: 2031+

Stephen Tanzer, January 2018,
Score: 91-93Full red-ruby. Pure, subtly perfumed aromas of blackberry, spices and licorice. Dense but youthfully linear, showing lovely finesse of texture to its tight-grained flavors of dark fruits, spices and saline minerality lifted by violet. With its compact kernel of fruit, this is neither sweet nor easygoing today, but its precision and definition call to mind a 2014, or even a 2010. Finishes classically dry and firmly tannic, with very persistent flavors of black fruits, spices and bitter chocolate. This very promising wine will need time in bottle to harmonize and expand.

Jancis Robinson, November 2017,
Score: 17+Close to Vosne-Romanée. Old vines; they are replanting half of it. Very dark crimson. Lovely lift and race. Silky and fresh. Real zing and purity, Long. So suave. Drink 2020-2035

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.
Region
Nuits-Saint-Georges
The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
