  • Goedhuis, October 2020

Precise, pure and floral on the nose, the exquisite yet tightly wound palate floods the senses with an abundance of dark blue and red fruits, violet and wild Mediterranean herb flavours. There’s wonderful sense of energy and freshness to the perfectly balanced palate. Although tempting to open now expect this brilliant 2016 to require five years in the cellar to reveal its full potential. Grattamacco has scaled new heights with this sensational 2016. Drink 2023 - 2035.

  • James Suckling, October 2020, Score: 95

So much rosemary and tobacco, highlighting the currants and other fruit on the nose. Medium body and firm, silky tannins. Balanced and fresh finish. Remains subtle and complex. From organically grown grapes. Best after 2020.

  • Decanter, October 2020, Score: 97

Grattamacco is one of the highest estates in Bolgheri, located just beneath the village of Castagneto Carducci. It has a distinctive contribution of 15% Sangiovese to the blend, along with the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This indigenous grape gives the wine a particular freshness and drinkability, rejuvenating the tension of the classic Bordeaux varieties. In 2016, Grattamacco has exceeded itself, with aromas of elegant, youthful red currant fruits integrated with citrus notes and cedar wood. On the palate the wine is perfectly balanced, and more immediately drinkable than some of the other top samples. It has delicious tension and ripeness, with a mediterranean character and a hint of kiwi on the finish. Drinking Window 2019 - 2045

  • Wine Spectator, October 2020, Score: 95

The aromas offer a subtle mix of black currant, violet, cedar, iron and sweet spices, evolving into an elegant profile, with superb balance and harmony. Complex and intense, this seems approachable even at this early stage, yet it will only gain with time in the bottle. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. Best from 2021 through 2048.

Situated only a stone’s throw from Ornellaia and Sassicaia, Grattamacco has become one of the top releases from Bolgheri in recent vintages regularly outscoring its illustrious neighbours. Established in 1977 Grattamacco is Bolgheri’s second oldest estate after Tenuta San Guido. In 2002 it was purchased by Mario Iris and Claudio Tipa, owners of the iconic Brunello, Poggio di Sotto, and their investment has transformed the fortunes here. Grattamacco’s 25 hectares of steep, hilly vineyards sit at an altitude of 150 metres with the Mediterranean visible from the winery only a mile away. The vines are perfectly exposed to the microclimate here which provides an excellent balance of warm daytime temperatures and cool evenings.Read less
