  • Goedhuis, December 2017

Deep brooding opaque colour. A luscious and full wine, with drive, richness and energy. It feels like so much more than a village cuvée with its open, dark, succulent fruit characteristics. This is bold, giving and so typically Gevrey.

  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 89-91

The 2016 Gevrey Chambertin Village comes from ten parcels and includes 30% whole bunch fruit and, again, around 40% new oak. It has a fragrant and more feminine bouquet than the Morey-Saint-Denis, as you would expect, with touches of rose petal complementing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, fresh in the mouth with a lot of finesse on the finish. This is another superb village cru from Drouhin-Laroze. Drink 2020-2030

  • Burghound, January 2018, Score: 89-91

The notably ripe yet super-fresh nose is composed by notes of plum liqueur, black cherry and ample amounts of pungent earth. There is excellent minerality to the sleek, intense and delineated medium weight flavors that possess much better overall complexity on the dusty, serious and balanced finish that is youthfully austere. Outstanding. Drink: 2023+

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2018, Score: 16

Straightforward, slightly jewelly fruit. Rather a pinched finish. Does this have some second-crop fruit in it, I wonder? Rather reminiscent of red hard candy/boiled sweets. Drink 2023-2030

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: parents Christine and Philippe, and children Caroline and Nicolas. They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
